I know. We’ve been told the opposite our whole lives. Eat well, fuel your body. Calories in, energy out.
But your cells don’t see a salad or a steak. They run on something much simpler: breath, light, charge, and movement.
Food is just one way to deliver energy. And honestly? It’s not even close to the most important one.
Your cells are little batteries.
Inside every cell, there are tiny power plants called mitochondria. They take electrons and pass them down a chain, spinning a molecular turbine that creates the energy your body runs on.
Here’s what most people don’t realize: those mitochondria are taking in fuel from five different sources at the same time.
One: Oxygen. This is the one nobody talks about, even though it’s the most important. At the very end of the energy chain inside your cells, oxygen is what catches the electrons and lets the whole system keep running. No oxygen, no energy. Period. You can go weeks without food. Days without water. But four minutes without oxygen and your cells start to die.
And most of us breathe terribly. Shallow, chest-high, mouth open, all day long. We’re chronically under-oxygenating our cells and wondering why we’re tired. Deep nasal breathing, time outside in real air, movement that gets oxygen flowing — this is cellular fuel in the most literal sense.
Two: Light. Sunlight, specifically the warm, infrared wavelengths in morning light, is absorbed directly by your mitochondria. It literally turns up the dial on cellular energy. You are, in the most beautiful sense, a little bit solar-powered.
Three: Water. Not water like a sports drink or carbonated aka sparkling water. Real water. The kind your cells actually use to hold a charge and move energy through your body. Most people are walking around dehydrated at the cellular level, even when they’re drinking water all day.
Four: Minerals. Magnesium, zinc, copper, iron. Without them, your cells physically cannot make energy. You can eat the cleanest diet on earth and still feel exhausted if you’re depleted, because the machinery itself can’t run.
Five: Food. Yes, food. But notice it’s last on the list. Your body breaks down what you eat and pulls electrons from the chemical bonds. Those electrons feed the system. It matters. But it’s the fifth most important input, not the first.
So why is everyone only talking about food?
Because food is sellable. Breath is free. Sunlight is free. Water is free. Minerals are cheap. The wellness industry can’t build a billion-dollar empire around morning sun and deep breathing, so it built one around eating instead.
But here’s the thing. Most people aren’t tired because they’re eating wrong. They’re tired because:
They’re shallow-breathing all day, every day.
They haven’t seen real morning sunlight in months.
Their water is dead. Stripped, filtered, mineral-empty.
Their food is mineral-depleted, even when it looks healthy.
Their cells are coated in oxidized vegetable oils from a lifetime of processed food.
And their gut — the gateway for all of this — is inflamed and leaking, quietly poisoning the whole system.
The better question.
This is where the real shift happens. Stop asking what should I eat?
Start asking: what’s limiting my energy production?
Instead of obsessing over inputs, look at the constraints:
Are your cells actually able to convert fuel into ATP efficiently? Or is the machinery itself broken?
Is your internal environment — hydration, minerals, structured water — supporting that process? Or working against it?
Most of the time, the answer isn’t eat more of this or cut out that. It’s that something deeper in the system is bottlenecked, and no amount of clean eating can push energy through a closed valve.
Sometimes the answer is: stop the input
Here’s the part of the conversation nobody wants to have.
We’ve made eating the entire focus of wellness — what to add, what to optimize, what superfood to chase next. But your body wasn’t designed to be in a constant state of intake. It was designed to alternate between taking in and letting go. Between digesting and resting. Between absorbing and releasing.
And right now, most of us are in input mode 24/7. Three meals, two snacks, a smoothie, a coffee, a supplement stack. The digestive system never closes for the night. The body never gets to do the other half of its job — which is cleaning house.
Digestion is one of the most energetically expensive things your body does. When you give it a break, even for a few hours longer than usual, something incredible happens: that energy gets redirected to repair, detoxification, and elimination. Your cells finally get to rest, take inventory, and dump the waste they’ve been holding onto.
This is why what’s coming out matters more than what’s going in.
Are you eliminating daily, fully, easily? Or are you constipated, sluggish, bloated? Is your skin clear, or breaking out? Is your tongue pink in the morning, or coated? Is your urine pale, or dark and concentrated? Are you sweating? Is your breath fresh?
Because if it’s not coming out, it’s stuck. And anything stuck in the body — undigested food, metabolic waste, unprocessed emotions, environmental toxins — is taking energy away from your cells, not giving it.
The most radical thing you can do for your energy is to stop the input.
A better way to think about it.
Your body is like a garden. Or a river.
A garden needs air, sun, water, and soil. In that order. Food is just the soil part.
A river needs to flow. Things have to come in and go out. The moment the current stops, everything stagnates.
So breathe deeply, through your nose. Get outside in the morning before you look at your phone. Drink water that still has its minerals. Cut the seed oils that are gunking up your cells. Heal your gut so the rest of it can actually land.
And sometimes — maybe most importantly — stop eating for a while and let your body catch up.
That’s the protocol. It looks nothing like a diet.
It looks like getting back to the way we were always meant to live.

Are you referring to near-IR effects on mitochondrial enzymes (like cytochrome c oxidase) that can modestly influence activity?
Mitochondria don't directly use light as an energy source-unlike chloroplasts in plants, which do use light for photosynthesis-so I just want to make sure we're not conflating those two systems.
